EUSKALTEL - EUSKADI (EUS) - ESP

The Euskaltel- Euskadi team represents Basque cycling and so has the most voracious and passionate fans in the sport.

As the return of the Vuelta Espana to the Basque Country proved in 2011, millions of cycling fans from the northern region of Spain are cycling connoisseurs. They dress in orange like the team and cheer on the riders at the Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco and the Tour de France.

The fans cheer for every rider who pulls on the orange colours and clicks into their Orbea bikes, but team leaders Samuel Sanchez and Igor Anton get special attention.

Sanchez was born in the Asturias region but has spent most of his cycling career in the Basque Country and so is considered an honoury Basque rider. He won the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and has ridden consistently well since then. He was second in the 2009 Vuelta Espana and went on to target overall success at the Tour de France. Last year he finished fifth overall in the Tour de France and won the special polka-dot jersey after dominating the climber’s competition with a series of attacks. He is also known as one of the best descender in the peloton, frequently winning with panache.

Anton boosted Basque pride by winning the stage of the Vuelta Espana to Bilbao in 2011. He attacked on the climb near the Basque city and soled to victory in front of a huge crowd that had waited 33 years to host a stage of the Vuelta. Anton also won stage 14 at the Giro d’Italia to the steep summit finish of the Zoncolan, confirming he is one of best pure climbers in the sport.

The Euskaltel- Euskadi team also includes some talented young riders such as Romain Sicard – the 2009 Under 23 road race world champion, Mikel Landa, Amets Txurruka and Gorka Verdugo.
